As a Marine Corps veteran, studying abroad was not something I originally saw as “for me.” I worried about age differences, fitting in socially, and whether my path looked different from traditional students. But what I found surprised me.

Concerns Veterans Often Have

  • “I’m older than most students.”

  • “I have financial responsibilities.”

  • “I don’t fit the typical study abroad image.”

  • “Is this practical for my career?”

All valid concerns.

What Actually Happened

  • My maturity helped me adjust quickly.

  • My discipline made academic expectations manageable.

  • My life experience helped me navigate unfamiliar situations.

  • Being a veteran became a bridge in conversations, not a barrier.

Why It Matters

Study abroad builds:

  • Cultural intelligence

  • Adaptability

  • Global awareness

  • Cross-cultural communication

These are leadership skills.

Veterans already have resilience. Studying abroad adds global perspective.

You absolutely belong in international spaces.
